Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium from Aqueous Medium Using a New Schiff Base Chitosan Derivative
نویسندگان
چکیده
Modification of chitosan biopolymer was achieved by grafting (3-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde) by the Schiff base reaction to synthesize a new chitosan derivative (ChD). The formation of the product was confirmed by FTIR, XRD and CNMR analysis. The grafted molecule provided additional nitrogen bearing groups as binding sites. The new derivative was used to investigate the removal of Cr (VI) ions in water. The sorption was best favoured at a pH of 3.0. From the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity for the adsorbent was determined (Qo=63.5 mg/g). The sorption data fitted satisfactorily to the Redlich-Peterson isotherm. The kinetics of adsorption was best described by pseudo-second order rate equation. The thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption of Cr (VI) on to ChD was spontaneous and accompanied by increase in entropy. The metal removal was favoured at lower temperatures indicating that the adsorption was exothermic in nature.

Background: The heavy metals are the most important pollutants their concentration of which in the environment is increasing in connection with cities and industrials development. One of these metals is chromium which, in the trivalent and Hexavalent oxidation state, is used in industries such as electroplating, glass, ceramic, tannery and leather. Hexavalent Chromium has proven several healt...

In the study, novel and sensitive carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) developed for thepotentiometric measurement of Cr(III) and Mg(II) ions in pharmacological and water samples.CPEs as indicator electrodes were prepared from a mixture of four components, includinggraphite powder, paraffin oil, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and a greenionophore (Chitosan Schiff base...
متن کاملPreparation of magnetic chitosan/Fe-Zr nanoparticles for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution
Copper and hexavalent chromium are heavy metals that are harmful to human health. Natural adsorbent chitosan, due to its considerable properties such as the presence of functional groups of –NH2 and -OH, non-toxicity, low cost, and biocompatibility, has gained much attention in pollutant removal. Therefore, in the present study, adsorption of chromium (VI) and copper (II) ions was conducted in ...
متن کاملRemoval of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution using canola biomass: Isotherms and kinetics studies
The removing of hexavalent chromium from wastewater or decreasing its chromium (VI) content up to the permitted levels is important due to its non-biodegradation, bioaccumulation, and cancer-causing and toxic effects. In the present study, biosorption of Cr (VI) from aqueous solutions using canola was investigated. The various physicochemical parameters such as pH, initial Cr (VI) ion concentra...
